Walking Art and Relational Geographies
International Encounters Girona-Olot-Vic, Catalonia Spain July 5-9 2022
A project by Contemporary Art Center Nau Côclea . Camallera Catalonia Spain
We met in Girona, Olot and Vic on July 5th-9th, here you can see/download a repport
The starting point of the human movement, the practice of walking offers us today an enriching and complex interaction between territories, cultures, creativity, communities, thought and public space. Walking becomes
an urgent and necessary perspective through which to look, analyse and understand the contemporary world.
Walking as a philosophy and a reflection, walking as an awareness of the emergence and needs of sustainability, walking as the beginning of the journey and as the endless experience of knowledge and discovery. Walking as a health practice. Walking as a connector between the self and the other, as a tool for relations between people and territories in their processes of transformation. Walking as a privileged instrument of perception of the landscape and as an artistic practice.
These lines and paths point to a field of action and analysis that crosses many practical and conceptual territories – in which culture, art, anthropology, geography, education, health. ecology, etc. intertwine – requiring an urgent and creative process of exploration.
The international meeting “Walking Art and Relational Geographies” aims to set a dialogue between theory and practice in which walking becomes an instrument of territorial connection, a mapping tool and a format of creative expression. A meeting point for debate, experience and reflection, ” Walking Art and Relational Geographies” will focus mainly on the analysis of the increasingly mediated relationship between people and geographies.
The Encounters are conceived together as simultaneous a Conference and an artistic event; in the format of an itinerant meeting between the cities of Girona, Olot and Vic, with a symbolically explicit transversal component.
The meeting also has, like the previous ones organized in Greece and Portugal, both academic and artistic axes. Academically it is a Conference developed with lectures and presentations. Artistically, actions, workshops and performances cross the talks and walks. This allows an interdisciplinary dialogue that helps to break down academic and artistic paradigms and to free up initiatives for a two-way communicative and fertilizing approach.
There is also an interdisciplinary aspect in the thematic intersection of the proposals with space for art, anthropology, urbanism, ecology and human geography.
The calls for participation are enclosed in this website. They are aimed at thinkers, eco-territorial agents and activists, geographers, artists and creators related to walking in the creative, educational, artistic and eco-territorial aspects. Theoretical papers, communications and artistic proposals (actions, workshops, walks etc.) can be presented. We also include the format of audio papers and audio walks for remote participation, along with a limited number of off-event online discussions in July and in September in the framework of Sound Walk September.
The official language of the Encounters is English but contributions in Spanish and Catalan will be accepted too.
